What it looks like
A girthy horse reacts when the girth is done up or when pressure is applied to the girth area. Signs can include pinning the ears, swishing the tail, tensing, fidgeting, attempting to bite, moving away, or becoming tense or hollow when first ridden. The reaction may be mild or strong, and may have built up gradually.
Girthiness is a behaviour with many possible explanations, so it is worth looking at carefully rather than assuming a single cause.
Common contributing factors
Several factors can contribute to a girthy response. Some are related to the saddle and girthing, including:
- A saddle that is uncomfortable or unbalanced, with the horse anticipating discomfort under work.
- A girth that pinches, is the wrong shape, or sits too far forward into the elbow.
- The girth being done up too quickly or too tightly.
- A saddle pulled too far forward, drawing the girth into the wrong position.
Other contributing factors can include gastric discomfort, muscular or skeletal issues, and learned behaviour, which is why assessment matters.
When to involve a vet or physiotherapist
Girthiness can be associated with underlying discomfort, including gastric issues, and this requires assessment. If the behaviour is new, strong, or accompanied by other changes, please involve a vet, and where appropriate a qualified physiotherapist. Saddle fit advice is not a substitute for veterinary advice, and we do not diagnose injury or disease.
How assessment and the right saddle may help
Once health has been checked, saddle and girthing comfort are worth reviewing. A back template, photographs and information about your current saddle and girth feed into remote saddle fitting. We can advise on balance, fit and girthing position, and on a more suitable IDEAL saddle where appropriate. See how it works.
