A rider working with a well-fitted IDEAL saddle

The process

How remote saddle fitting works, step by step

A clear, unhurried process that gathers the right evidence before any saddle is ordered.

A considered process, not a sales funnel

Choosing the right saddle should feel methodical and reassuring. Our remote fitting process is built around careful evidence and honest conversation, so that by the time anything is ordered, you understand exactly why a particular saddle and specification have been recommended. Our advice and suggestions are free and entirely without obligation.

The steps

1. Initial enquiry

You get in touch — by enquiry form, email, phone or message. Tell us about you, your horse and the kind of saddle you are looking for. Whatever photos or notes you have easily to hand are fine at this stage; there is no need to prepare anything formal yet.

2. Suitability review

We consider whether remote fitting is the right route for your horse and your situation. Most cases are well suited to it, but some are not, and we will tell you honestly if a hands-on, local assessment is needed first, or if a welfare or soundness concern should be checked by your vet before anything else.

3. Template, photo and video instructions

Once we agree to proceed, we send clear instructions for the evidence we need:

  • A back template or tracing of your horse, taken our way
  • Photographs from set angles showing the back, withers, shoulder and conformation
  • A short video of your horse standing and, where useful, moving

We guide you through each one so you are confident you have done it correctly.

4. Saddle, model and specification advice

With the evidence in front of us, we discuss the recommendation: which IDEAL model may suit, and the width, seat size, flap, panels, balance and tree to consider. Because we specialise in Designed to Order, the specification can be tailored to your horse and to you as a rider, rather than squeezed from a fixed stock shape. Ask as many questions as you like — further calls or video calls can be arranged.

5. Supply and order

When you are happy with the recommendation, we handle the order, the liaison with the manufacturer and the supply. The quoted price includes the saddle and the fitting. Made-to-order saddles are built to your specification and take time to make, so we will give you a realistic timescale up front.

6. Delivery

We arrange delivery of your finished saddle to you, wherever you are. We supply riders across the UK and worldwide and will set clear expectations about delivery from the outset.

7. Follow-up after delivery

Once your saddle arrives, we follow up. If something needs attention, we want to know. Your purchase is backed by a full money-back guarantee and after-sales service — see guarantee and aftercare.

8. Longer-term checks

Horses change shape with age, work, fitness and condition, and saddles can be adjusted in response. Over the longer term we remain available for advice, and where appropriate the flocking or tree can be altered so the saddle continues to suit your horse.

We are here at every step

At no point are you left to work it out alone. If you have a question, ask it; if you need another conversation before deciding, we will arrange one.

When you are ready, start your saddle enquiry and we will reply with your next steps. You can also read more about what remote fitting is or browse the IDEAL range.
