The challenge of an older horse
As horses age, their shape commonly changes. Many lose muscle and topline, become more hollow behind the wither, or develop a more prominent spine and shoulder. A saddle that fitted comfortably for years can gradually stop sitting well as the back beneath it alters.
A loss of topline often leaves a dip behind the shoulder, which can cause a saddle to bridge, rock forward or sit unevenly. The horse may also be less able to build muscle back, so the saddle needs to suit the back as it is now.
What to look for
For an older horse, fit considerations usually include:
- Panels that follow the current contour of the back rather than an idealised shape, to avoid bridging.
- Flocking and balance that can be adjusted as condition changes.
- Even weight distribution to protect a back that may be more sensitive.
- Comfort and stability for a horse that may be in lighter or less consistent work.
The goal is to keep an older horse comfortable and willing in the work it is still doing, rather than chasing a topline it may no longer carry.
How IDEAL saddles and Designed to Order can help
IDEAL panels can often be re-flocked and balanced to follow a changing back, and a range of fittings allows for a horse that has altered shape. Where the back has changed significantly, IDEAL’s Designed to Order service lets the panel shape and balance be specified around the horse’s current conformation.
Prices include the saddle and the fitting. Our general-purpose and dressage ranges suit many older horses, with wider fittings where needed.
Why remote fitting works well
A fresh back template and current photographs capture exactly how an older horse’s back has changed, which is the basis of good remote saddle fitting. See how it works for the process.
A note on welfare
Changes in an older horse’s shape, comfort or behaviour can have many causes and require assessment. Saddle fit advice is not a substitute for veterinary advice, and a vet or physiotherapist may be involved alongside fitting.
