Remote Fitting Guides

Videos for Remote Saddle Fitting

A practical guide to the videos that help most with remote saddle fitting.

Why video adds so much

Photographs and a back template show us the horse standing still, but a saddle has to work in movement. Short videos let us see how the horse moves, how the current saddle behaves under work, and whether problems such as slipping or restriction appear once the horse is going. Video makes remote saddle fitting more reliable, particularly for tricky cases.

A phone is all you need. Clear, steady footage in good light is far more useful than anything fancy.

What to film

Where you can do so safely, please try to capture:

  • The horse walked away from and towards the camera on a straight, level line, unsaddled, so we can see how it moves and any asymmetry.
  • The horse trotted up in hand, away and towards the camera, on a firm level surface.
  • The horse in profile in walk and trot, so we can see the movement of the back and shoulder.
  • The horse ridden in walk and trot, filmed from the side, showing how the saddle and rider sit in motion.
  • The horse ridden from behind, briefly, so we can see whether the saddle stays central or drifts to one side.

If you are dealing with a specific problem, film the moment it shows, for example a saddle slipping sideways or creeping forward over the shoulder.

Filming tips

  • Use good, even daylight and keep the sun behind the camera.
  • Keep the camera as steady and level as you can, ideally with a helper filming.
  • Film on a firm, level, non-slip surface.
  • Keep clips short and focused; several short clips are easier to view than one long one.
  • Stand far enough back to keep the whole horse in frame.
  • Always prioritise safety; never compromise handler or rider safety for a shot.

With and without the saddle

As with photographs, footage both with and without the saddle is valuable. Unsaddled clips show the horse’s natural movement; ridden clips show how the current saddle and rider affect that movement and where any issues arise.

Sending your videos

Videos are best sent alongside your photographs and template. Use the remote fitting checklist so nothing is missed, and see how it works for the full process.

When you are ready, start your remote fitting enquiry and we will tell you the best way to send your video files.
